Constitution Day
In 2004, Congress passed an amendment making
September 17 Constitution Day. The law requires all publicly funded educational
institutions to provide programming on that day to educate students about the
Constitution of the United States. In May 2005, the U.S. Department of Education
announced the enactment of this law and applied it to all schools receiving
federal funds of any kind.
In 2013, the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana, as part of a national
project, is launching a program to bring the Constitution to life on
Constitution Day for students in Indiana. The ACLU of Indiana will offer a learning toolkit to educators, which includes games, contests
and lesson plans to make learning about the Constitution fun. We are also
partnering with other organizations to make available to classrooms the toolkits
and volunteer attorneys
as speakers. The program is targeted to middle school
students, but can be made available to any interested classroom in Indiana.
