The ACLU of Indiana is the Indiana affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union. The ACLU is dedicated to protecting the freedoms guaranteed to Indiana residents and businesses by the Indiana and United States Constitutions.
The American Civil Liberties Union was founded in 1920 and is our nation's guardian of liberty. The ACLU works in the courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to all people in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States. The ACLU of Indiana is a nonpartisan membership organization and our membership includes Libertarians, Republicans, Democrats and Independents. Further, it is the ACLU’s mission to restrain government power and to secure rights granted to all citizens in the Bill of Rights.
The issues most common to the Indiana affiliate of the ACLU are: disability rights, freedom of speech, GLBT rights, immigrant rights, police practices, prisoner rights, racial justice, religion and beliefs, reproductive freedom, the rights of the poor, technology and privacy, voting rights, and youth rights. However, there are several more issues affecting civil liberties and rights that are fought all across the country.

We are ecstatic to announce two major victories on behalf of Hoosiers and civil liberties.
First, US District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt has now said that the de-funding of Planned Parenthood law violates federal Medicaid rules (Indianapolis Star, 6/25: http://bit.ly/lUnKQL). Second, another US District Judge Sarah Evans Barker has issued an injunction on the spiteful immigration law because it “violated the Constitution’s due process and search and seizure provisions, as well as other protections” (Indianapolis Star, 6/25: http://bit.ly/izZ7RT).
Every member of the ACLU of Indiana is proud of the rulings, our legal team, our friends at Planned Parenthood of Indiana, and of all of you who have supported us throughout the battle so far.
But we’re not out of the woods yet. Our Legal Director Ken Falk has made clear that while the Planned Parenthood is a positive step, it is also only one in what is shaping up to be a long legal battle.
The level of vitriol shown towards women, the poor, and immigrants this legislative session has been shocking. For example, a senate committee voted down an amendment requiring that what doctors and abortion providers are required to tell women should be “medically and scientifically accurate” (http://bit.ly/mwbsga). In other words, those attacking our civil liberties aren’t concerned about your rights or the rights of women, and immigrants, and they certainly aren’t concerned about the impact bad policy will have on our state.
But we are. And the ACLU of Indiana will fight constantly to protect your rights. And, while everyone in the office is smiling today, we’re also preparing for our next day in court fighting the attacks against civil liberties. That’s the nature of the ACLU’s work; it’s an unending battle to resist political attacks on civil rights, because those attacks come every day.
We’ll fight, and we’ll win, just like we won these two cases. But we could use your help. There are any number of things you could do to help us continue the fight against de-funding Planned Parenthood, harassing immigrants, or treating two women in a loving relationship like second-class citizens. You could help by ‘liking’ us on Facebook, becoming a member of the ACLU if you aren’t already, or donating today.
Again, we want to thank you for all of your kind words and support, and we hope you will continue that support. With your help, these victories are sure to continue.
