The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana is “Raising the Bar for Civil Liberties.”

In September 2011, the ACLU-IN announced the largest gift in its history – a gift of $500,000 from the estate of Albert and Sara Reuben, designed to serve as the cornerstone of a three-year campaign to take the 58-year-old organization to the next level, in terms of its ability to promote, protect and defend the rights and freedoms guaranteed to all in the Bill of Rights and the state and national Constitutions.

The need for the ACLU has seldom been greater.   The ACLU of Indiana receives some 800 requests for assistance every month, and its nationally-renown legal department has up to 40 cases on its docket at any one-time.   But it has lacked the resources to engage in the pro-active lobbying and educational outreach activities that could make a legal recourse the last line of defense, instead of the only line of defense, when government infringes on individuals’ civil rights.

“Raising the Bar for Civil Liberties” is a three-year, $5 million campaign to transform the Indiana affiliate of the ACLU and create a solid, sustainable base for the long-term fulfillment of its mission – defending the Constitution and the Bill of Rights through advocacy, education, and legal action.

Your support of this campaign will allow the ACLU of Indiana to:

  • Add professional staff in each of the areas of advocacy, education, and legal action;
  • Modernize our facilities to allow staff and volunteers to be more productive;
  • Support the work of the national office on federal civil liberties issues;
  • Create an endowment to support defense of the Constitution in the future … because “No victory ever stays won…”
