The ACLU of Indiana is seeking an experienced, mission-driven applicant for the position of a Finance Manager. The ACLU of Indiana is a statewide affiliate of the national ACLU. 

The Finance Manager reports to the Executive Director to manage the day-to-day finances for the organization, as well as manage overall budget, reconciliation, and auditing functions. The Finance Manager will ensure that the organization is meeting its financial potential and is responsible for the integrity of financial and accounting processes. The position will also supervise the Office Manager and support and inform administrative processes, strategic budgeting, and decision-making by senior leaders in the organization and the Board of Directors. This position will be based in Indianapolis.

What you’ll do

  • Help lead the organizational budgeting process, including ongoing budget monitoring, and manage the finances for the organization.

  • Work with external accountants, auditors, banks, and other financial institutions to ensure the sound management of the ACLU of Indiana’s financial operations, including budgeting, payroll, receipts, disbursements, internal controls, and internal and external financial reporting.

  • Oversee all payroll functions to ensure that employees are paid in a timely and accurate manner; ensure that all statutory and benefits remittances are submitted on time.

  • Help prepare grant budgets and track and prompt grant reporting, in consultation with the Development Department, Executive Director, and senior staff. 

  • Develop and implement financial procedures. 

  • Ensure timely and accurate compliance with internal financial policies, and local, state, and federal regulations and laws impacting nonprofit organizations. 

  • Coordinate with other staff members on other areas of compliance for the organization.

  • Prepare and gather all supporting materials for annual audit and tax filings.

  • Coordinate and manage relationships with bank and other financial service providers as required and appropriate.

  • Coordinate with ACLU National on the financial relationship between the state and national organizations, including but not limited to revenue reconciliation.

  • Manage cash flow and prepare cash flow forecasts.

  • Prepare timely and accurate financial reports and analysis for the board treasurer, board of directors and key staff; keep the executive director apprised and well-informed about budget and financial matters.

  • Oversee the reconciliation of bank and investment accounts.

  • Supervise and coordinate duties with the Office Manager to ensure that the administrative needs of the organization and of the staff are properly supported.

  • Help to standardize and manage the procurement process for independent contractors.

  • Other duties as assigned.

What you’ll need

  • Significant experience in nonprofit financial management, accounting, or related field and/or a combination of experience and relevant advanced education.

  • Strong financial management skills, including experience in budget planning and implementation, and creating, reading, and analyzing financial statements. 

  • Proficiency in generally accepted accounting principles and procedures and their application to accounting for nonprofit organizations. 

  • Experience that demonstrates good professional judgment, including the ability to exercise discretion and responsibly handle highly confidential information such as financial statements and benefits and payroll information.

  • Proficiency with office technology and information systems, including online communications, word processing, spreadsheets, and accounting software (Quickbooks or similar). 

  • Strong attention to detail with exceptional organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills and a systems-oriented working style that allows identification of problems as opportunities to generate solutions that will have an impact tomorrow and long-term. 

  • Demonstrated ability to translate financial concepts and analyses clearly to those less familiar with them, in written and verbal formats. 

  • Ability to jump from task to task regularly and easily, to prioritize, to stay organized, and to complete assignments under sometimes tight deadlines.

  • Flexibility and willingness to learn new tools, technology, and resources. 

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work inclusively and collaboratively. 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex processes in a clear and concise manner.

  • Unwavering commitment to the mission and goals of the ACLU, including a demonstrated commitment to equity and racial justice.

  • Experience working in a non-profit, advocacy, or political organization is preferred.

COMPENSATION:

Salary based on relevant experience and skills. The salary range for this position is $65,000-$75,000. Excellent benefits include 10 days paid vacation and 10 paid sick/personal days; medical and dental insurance; life insurance; short-term and long-term disability insurance; 401(k) with matching contribution; employer contribution to Health Savings Account; and, generous paid holidays.
