This bill is just another attempt in a long line of bills intended to eliminate access to abortion in the Indiana. Abortion laws, such as HB 1217, are the byproduct of a decade’s long public and political campaign to market the false narrative that any woman who seeks an abortion does so because she is confused, misled or coerced. This assumption reflects a lack of respect for women's moral decision-making. All women have carefully considered their decision to have an abortion by the time they arrive at the clinic.

HB 1217 does not do enough to distinguish between true coercion and pressure. We all feel pressure when we are faced with important decisions, but because this bill is so unclear there can be harmful unintended consequences for a woman who is seeking advice about a pregnancy decision.
