This vaguely worded bill would ban schools from “promoting or encouraging the use of” student pronouns or chosen names that are “inconsistent with biological sex.” Enforcement of this law would inevitably require schools to lean on harmful stereotypes about gender, and would place any student who simply doesn’t conform to those stereotypes under a microscope. Trans youth already experience severely elevated levels of bullying in Indiana – 3 in 5 report being harassed at school by both students and staff. Passing legislation like this all but guarantees those numbers will increase.
