This bill would remove Indianapolis’s control over its local police department by instating a five-member, state-appointed board to oversee the Indianapolis metropolitan police department. SB 168 is clearly in response to efforts over the summer to improve IMPD’s relationship with the community. The city of Indianapolis and IMPD made major strides to reform the use-of-force policy, following requests from the local community.  This is an attempt to take power and oversight away from the very communities, local police departments are meant to serve.
