It is a common misconception that juvenile records are automatically expunged when a child legally becomes an adult. There is no automatic expungement of juvenile records in Indiana. The current system requires individuals who have interacted with the juvenile justice system to independently petition the court for their records to be destroyed. This bill would develop a system for Indiana where juvenile records are automatically expunged in particular circumstances. This system would not only solve critical problems but would reduce unnecessary hurdles young Hoosiers face.
