In America, students do not lose their constitutional rights “at the schoolhouse gate.” The ACLU of Indiana is working to protect students’ free speech rights and privacy.

  • Student Journalism (HB 1016) MONITORING
HB 1016 promotes freedom of speech and press by extending and enforcing these vital First Amendment guarantees on behalf of student journalists.
  • School Discipline (HB 1421) SUPPORT
This bill addresses the school-to-prison pipeline, a disturbing national trend wherein children are funneled out of public schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems.  HB 1421 would require school officials to create an evidence-based plan to address the underlying causes of excessive school discipline.
  • Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SB 65) OPPOSE
Plainly intended to target LGBTQ students, this bill would limit instruction on “human sexuality” including instruction on “sexual orientation” or “gender identity.”  The bill would require written consent from a parent or guardian for such instruction to be provided. By targeting a vulnerable group of young people and preventing educators from creating safe and responsive learning environments, this bill could result in violations of Title IX and the Constitution and subject the state to protracted and costly litigation.
