The ACLU of Indiana is seeking applicants for the full-time position of Communications Generalist. The Communications Generalist is a skilled multimedia communications professional that supports the organization’s strategic communications, digital outreach, and media relations efforts on a range of civil liberties issues.
In collaboration with the ACLU of Indiana’s Legal, Policy, and Advocacy teams, the Communications team helps Hoosiers engage in strategic ways with state and local elected officials and other government decision-makers to win back, preserve, and advance a range of federal and state constitutional rights. We do this through providing reliable, accurate, unbiased information in a digestible, interesting, and motivating way.
The Communications Generalist works under the supervision of the Communications Manager and in collaboration with other ACLU of IN staff members, the ACLU national office, and with coalition partners.
Job Responsibilities:
- Draft and send news releases and advisories
- Monitor and respond to media inquiries and coordinate media interviews
- Assist with coordinating press coverage at events
- Build and maintain relationships with media members across Indiana
- Identify and strategize outreach to new and emerging media outlets statewide
- Assist with providing media training to staff, partners, and clients
- Assist with developing and designing social media graphics, educational and outreach materials (brochures, fliers, postcards, etc.) as needed
- Write/review and schedule social media content
- Review social media metrics and make recommendations on strategies
- Assist with editing and updating the ACLU of Indiana website
- Draft and assist in reviewing written content, including but not limited to reports, blog posts, web pages, and email content
- Other communications tasks as assigned

Qualifications:
- A minimum of four (4) years of professional experience demonstrating meaningful proficiency across multiple areas such as strategic communications, content creation, digital communications, and public relations. Experience in media or journalism is considered a strong asset but is not required. We're seeking a communicator who’s comfortable switching gears—whether it’s crafting a digital campaign, shaping a press release, or telling a compelling story.
- Avid consumer of news and understanding of Indiana’s media and political landscape
- Experience with graphic design software (like Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva), a solid understanding of graphic design principles, and excitement about continuing to develop these skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Solid proofreading skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse staff, partners, and work across the political spectrum
- Ability to handle and prioritize multiple activities and responsibilities
- Desire to learn more about the different populations who make up Indiana and ways to translate the importance of our issues for them
- Ability to execute on projects and request help or guidance from your supervisor when you’re unclear on expectations or next steps
Salary and Benefits:
The ACLU of Indiana is a hybrid office; employees can choose to work from home up to two days a week. Employees are expected to work from our downtown Indianapolis office for the remainder of the week.
As a full-time exempt employee, your benefit package in this position will include paid time off, health, dental, and life insurance, short- and long-term disability insurance, and employer contributions to employee’s Health Savings Account and 401k.
