The ACLU Campaign for Smart Justice is an unprecedented, multiyear effort to reduce the U.S. jail and prison population by 50% and to combat racial disparities in the criminal justice system.

Free speech is the foundation of democracy, protecting a free press, open debate, and the right to dissent. Since 1920, the ACLU and the ACLU of Indiana have defended these rights in courts and communities, from political yard signs to student expression, while making clear that speech does not include threats or violence.

We defend Hoosiers’ privacy as technology races ahead of the law — fighting warrantless and dragnet surveillance by government and corporations and advancing safeguards so your communications, location, and data stay yours. In the legislature and the courts, we rein in surveillance, strengthen data rights, and ensure free speech and equality endure in the digital age.

The promise of equality is unfinished. The ACLU of Indiana pushes for policies and accountability that move Indiana toward true racial justice.

Religious freedom includes two complementary protections: the right to religious belief and expression and a guarantee that the government will not show preferential treatment to one religion over another.
