Across the state, immigrants are ineligible for a driver’s license, including both those here with lawful status and those without, struggle to accomplish the basic tasks of daily life - purchase groceries, keep medical appointments, attend worship services, participate in their children’s education, to school, and more – safely. There are, at most, a handful of communities in Indiana where Hoosiers can get by without the ability to drive. As a result, many of our neighbors across the state are on our roads without a driver’s license.

By creating driver cards, these bills would establish a system that increases the number of drivers in our state who have been tested and who are registered and insured. As a result, our roads will be safer. This is a step that almost two dozen other states have taken, and Indiana should follow suit.
