Bio

Ashley Toruno is a Community Engagement and Policy Advocate at the ACLU of Indiana. In her role, Ashley develops and implements advocacy strategies across issue areas in collaboration with a three-member advocacy team. She is a graduate of Indiana University’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs and has dedicated her career to political advocacy with various roles influencing policy change at the federal, state, and local levels. Born and raised in central Indiana, Ashley is a first-generation American and comes from a family of resilient Nicaraguan immigrants. Inspired by her family, instilled in Ashley lies the profound motivation to fight against injustice.

Demands to Divest from IMPD Must Not Go Unheard

Last Thursday, IMPD proposed its 2021 budget to the Indianapolis City-County Council Public Safety and Criminal Justice Committee. During the committee meeting, IMPD leadership broke down their $261,245,103 budget line by line. The main takeaway being that IMPD seeks more officers and more equipment.
