TAKE ACTION NOW

The recent protests in response to the killings of Dreasjon Reed, McHale Rose, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others by law enforcement have made one thing clear: we must take real steps to dismantle racist systems and do the hard work of overhauling our approach to public safety. We need broad changes to law enforcement policies, practices, and cultures. We need a bold reimagining of the role police play in our society.

Message Mayor Hogsett to demand he take immediate action. We have provided a sample message below.

SUBJECT: Divest from Police and Invest in Black Lives

In the wake of the killings of Dreasjon Reed, McHale Rose, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others by law enforcement, we are seeing a massive uprising against the role and scope of policing in the United States. More than ever before, this movement is calling for divestment from police departments, and reinvestment into the life-affirming services that help communities thrive.

It is not enough for local governments to make small reforms or to invest in yet another set of flawed training programs.

As Hoosiers, we rely on our elected officials to step up to the plate when the people call for action. We look to you to show courage and leadership through difficult times. We are looking to you now.

Please commit that you will:

  1. Limit or eliminate the role of police in situations where alternative interventions or responses would be safer and more effective;

  2. Decrease current policing budgets and, guided by community input, reinvest funds from policing into community services and programs;

  3. Stop allocating funds for more officers and more militarized equipment, and instead invest in health care, education and community-run violence-prevention programs.
